"The War of the Rebellion: A Compilation of the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies" (commonly called "The Official Records"), published by the Government Printing Office, 1880-1901. 128 volumes. This complete set is the original GPO issuance (published in the late 1800's); however, the books were re-bound some time prior to 1980. Binding is leather with gilt. The volumes are in very good condition; a few show discoloration on some page edges and there is minor cracking on a few of the bindings. When the books were re-bound, the binder mis-labeled eight of the 128 volumes. (There are tiny removable labels visible in the photos of the books on the shelves. Those labels have the correct volume information for those mis-labeled volumes.) The owners of this collection purchased the set in 1982 from Glenn Books, Inc., an antiquarian book store, which was located in downtown Kansas City, Missouri. Since that time the books have been shelved in the owner's library and kept in pristine condition. No serious study of the American Civil War is complete without consulting the Official Records. Also known as the "OR", the 128 volumes of the Official Records provide the most comprehensive, authoritative, and voluminous reference on Civil War operations. They have never been on the shelves with the books. The owners do also smoke, but not in that room, and they do have air-filtering in the home.
